Each job is passed to one fencer who holds a QBCC licence. They measure, quote and build it.

What the fence is for

Rural fencing starts with what has to stay in or out. Horses do best behind post-and-rail or a sighter wire they can see; cattle need strong strained wire; sheep, goats and dogs need mesh. A frontage along the road is often post-and-rail for looks, with wire behind it for the stock.

Strainers carry the load

A wire fence is only as good as its strainer assemblies: the heavy posts and stays at every corner, gate and change of direction that hold the tension. Line posts in between mostly keep the wire at height. If a quote is light on strainers, the fence will sag.

Ground and machinery

Acreage around Highfields and Westbrook mixes rocky ground with deep soil. Rock can mean drilling rather than digging, and long runs often need a post driver or auger on a machine. Ask whether access for that machinery is included and what happens if rock is hit.

Licensing on rural land

The licensing rules differ for fencing on agricultural or pastoral land, so ask the fencer how they apply to your job. For a residential acreage block, the usual QBCC rules for work over $3,300 apply.

What the quote should list

  • Fence type, height and number of wires or rails
  • Post material and spacing, and the number of strainer assemblies
  • Gates
  • Clearing the line and removing old fencing
  • Machinery and access

Questions

Common questions

Does a fencer need a licence?

For building work over $3,300 in Queensland, yes: a QBCC licence in the right class. Rules differ for fencing on agricultural or pastoral land. The licence number should be on the quote.

What it costs
Free. The fencer does the quoting
  • Your fence goes to one licensed fencer, not a list of them
  • A rough length in metres and a photo of the boundary go a long way
  • Ask for posts, footings, sheets or palings and removal of the old fence to be priced separately
