Fences in Middle Ridge go to one QBCC-licensed fencer who works there.

Thirty-year-old fences

Middle Ridge was farmland before rural-residential lots arrived in the 1980s and housing subdivisions followed through the 1990s. Many of those blocks still have the timber boundary fence that went up with the house. After thirty years, posts rot at ground level, palings split and the whole run starts to lean, usually toward whichever side gets the wind.

Replace or repair

If most posts are sound, replacing palings and a few posts can buy years. If the posts are going, a full replacement is usually the better value. Many owners switch to Colorbond at this point; others stay with timber, often on steel posts. Colorbond or timber compares the two.

Pools and gates

Larger yards here often have a pool, and an older pool barrier may no longer meet the current standard. If the boundary fence is part of the barrier, replacing it brings pool rules into play. See pool fencing.

Questions from around here

What does it cost to ask?

Nothing. The call and the form are free, the fencer quotes for free, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Does my neighbour have to pay half?

Generally, yes, for a sufficient dividing fence: Queensland neighbours usually share the cost equally. Anyone wanting more than a sufficient fence pays the extra. If you cannot agree, a written notice to contribute is the formal next step.

Can a boundary fence be my pool fence?

Yes, if it meets the pool safety standard: at least 1200mm high, non-climbable on the outside, and nothing climbable within 300mm on the inside. The neighbour must get formal notice before work starts.

Can an old fence be repaired instead?

Often. If the posts are sound, replacing palings or a panel is cheaper than a new fence. If the posts have rotted or the fence leans along its length, replacement is usually better value.

What it costs
Free. The fencer does the quoting
  • Your fence goes to one licensed fencer, not a list of them
  • A rough length in metres and a photo of the boundary go a long way
  • Ask for posts, footings, sheets or palings and removal of the old fence to be priced separately
