What a Fencing Quote Should Include

The lines that should appear on a fence quote, so two quotes can be compared fairly.

Why there is no price here

Fence prices depend on length, height, type, the ground, the slope and what has to be removed first. Any price per metre printed here would be wrong for most jobs. What helps more is knowing what a proper quote should show.

The lines to look for

  • Total length in metres, and height
  • Post material, spacing and footing depth
  • Sheets, palings or slats: type and style
  • Rails and capping
  • How slopes and steps are handled
  • Removal and disposal of the old fence
  • Gates and hardware
  • Any retaining or plinths at the bottom
  • Who arranges approvals, if the fence is over 2 metres or part of a pool barrier

The licence

Queensland fencing jobs worth more than $3,300 must be done by a QBCC licensee. Their licence number belongs on the paperwork; check it against the online register before any deposit changes hands.

Comparing two quotes

Line the quotes up item by item. A cheaper one may have wider post spacing, shallower footings or no old fence removal. Ask about anything missing rather than assuming it is included.

For a shared fence

A written quote is also what you attach to a notice to contribute. See dividing fence rules.

What it costs
Free. The fencer does the quoting
  • Your fence goes to one licensed fencer, not a list of them
  • A rough length in metres and a photo of the boundary go a long way
  • Ask for posts, footings, sheets or palings and removal of the old fence to be priced separately
